ED Treatment Options

Erectile dysfunction is a persistent inability to maintain an erection during sexual activity.Unlike in the past, when it was taboo to talk about, erectile dysfunction is a topic that today is openly discussed; this is good news for the 30 million men in the U.S. experiencing and seeking treatment for this condition.
  1. Treament Options

    • The cause of the erectile dysfunction determines the treatment, which can include medications, testosterone replacements, vacuum pump devices and surgical prostheses.

    Medications

    • Medications may be administered orally, like Viagra, by suppository into the tip of the penis, like Alprostadil, or self injected on the side of the penis, such as papavarine.

    Testosterone Replacement

    • Men with ED caused by low testosterone levels may be treated with hormone replacement therapy.

    Vacuum Pump Device

    • One treatment for ED involves a vacuum-constricting device positioned over the penis that draws blood into the penis. A band then secures and sustains the erection. The band can stay on for 20 minutes.

    Surgical Implants

    • Another ED treatment involves surgical implants of a semi-rigid rod or an inflatable prosthesis into the penis.

    Alternative Treatments

    • Nutritional therapy like vitamins C, E, flax-seed meal and Asian ginseng is available. Acupuncture and sex therapy are also good alternatives.
