Definition of a Spastic Colon

Spastic colon is another name for irritable bowel syndrome. The most common symptoms of spastic colon are either diarrhea or constipation. The cause of spastic colon is unknown. Though spastic colon may resolve in time, it can also be chronic.

    • Besides diarrhea and constipation, other symptoms of spastic colon may include frequent urge to use the bathroom, weight changes, exhaustion and dehydration. There may be also pain in the stomach and intestinal region.

    Diet

    • A change in diet may help with spastic colon. Foods high in fiber can help regulate bowel movements. Staying away from fatty foods, alcohol and cigarettes also can assist when dealing with spastic colon.

    Medication

    • Medications are given to alleviate symptoms. Immodium is recommended for those with diarrhea and laxative for those who suffer from constipation.

    Stress

    • According to research conducted at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research there is a direct correlation between spastic colon and stress. Since the condition can cause embarrassment, therapy is also suggested in coping with the syndrome.

    Alternative Treatment

    • Using treatments such as acupuncture, Chinese herbs, colonics and other alternate medicine have helped some who suffer from spastic colon.
