What Is Metronidazol?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is most commonly prescribed for conditions such as infections of the stomach, skin, joints and vagina, though it is not used for yeast infections. It is most often administered orally.

    • The brand name of metronidazole is Flagyl. It is made by the drug company Pfizer.

    Gel

    • Metronidazole is also made into a gel (Rozex and MetroGel) for skin conditions such as rosacea.

    Common Side Effects

    • Normal side effects of metronidazole are nausea and a metallic taste in the mouth. Long term use can have toxic effects on the body.

    Cancer Connection?

    • Though metronidazole has caused cancer in animals during clinical trials, the FDA has decided its benefits are far greater than any risks involved.

    When Not to Take Metronidazole

    • People with liver conditions, Crohn's disease, anemia or nerve disorders should not take metronidazole.
