Appendicitis Symptoms in a Child

The appendix is a small pouch located next to the colon on the right side of the body, and though it has no known purpose, it is capable of causing serious problems when it becomes puss-filled and irritated. This condition is called appendicitis. According to The Mercy Children's Hospital website, a child with appendicitis will display the following symptoms, though it is important to note that they can be mistaken for those of other conditions and only a doctor can make an exact diagnosis.

Pain

• He will experience pain around his navel or on the right side of his waist. This pain will become increasingly intense as the condition progresses. It may be hard for a child to express the exact location of the pain, thus making it hard to know the cause immediately.

Nausea

• The child will experience nausea.

Vomiting

• The child may vomit.

Fever

• She will have a low-grade fever.

Activity level

• There will be a change in his activity level as a result of the pain. He may lie on his side and refuse to walk or play.
