Redness Swelling & Pain in Lower Leg

Redness, swelling and pain in the lower leg can be the result of injury, an insect bite, or even a blood clot. Blood clots can form in the legs due to poor circulation and long periods of sitting. If your lower leg symptoms are caused by a blood clot, it can result in heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs) if you fail to get prompt medical attention.
  1. Ice

    • Apply ice to reduce swelling and inflammation in the lower leg if the symptoms are caused by either an insect bite or an injury.

    Elevation

    • Elevate the affected leg to help with blood return and to reduce swelling.

    Medication

    • Avoid taking aspirin, just in case a blood clot is present. Ibuprofen is typically recommended as an anti-inflammatory for injuries.

    Blood Clots

    • Blood clots in the legs can present with redness, swelling and pain; this is a medical emergency. Stay off of the affected leg as much as possible and avoid activities that may increase blood pressure while waiting for medical attention.

    Seeking Help

    • If you do not know the cause of your lower leg symptoms, go immediately to the emergency room. If your symptoms worsen or persist after 24 hours, consult your physician.
