Naproxen Overdose Symptoms

Naproxen is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID)that is used to treat fever, inflammation and pain. This drug is available in an over the counter form, which is sold as Aleve. It is also available in a prescription strength formula. While Naproxen is considered safe, just as with any drug, there is a chance of overdose.
  1. Circulatory Problems

    • One of the most severe symptoms of a Naproxen overdose is having symptoms that indicate a stroke or heart attack. These include pain on the left side of the body including the chest, trouble breathing, slurred speech or extreme weakness.

    Nausea and Vomiting

    • An overdose of Naproxen will cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. This is because the drug irritates the stomach.

    Kidney and Liver Effects

    • Naproxen, like all NSAIDs, is filtered by the kidneys and liver. Overdosing on NSAIDs can cause itching and fluid retention, which signals kidney and liver problems.

    Bleeding Ulcers

    • Naproxen affects the rate at which blood clots. When coupled with the irritation of the stomach, bleeding ulcers can form. Symptoms of this are black, tarry stools, dizziness when standing and weakness of the limbs.

    Blood Pressure

    • Overdosing on Naproxen raises the blood pressure. While this isn't the most serious of the overdose effects for most people, it is life threatening for people who naturally suffer from high blood pressure.
