How to Improve Circulation in Varicose Veins

Poor circulation contributes to the formation of varicose veins. People who sit or stand for long periods of time such as hair stylists, retail and factory workers and those who sit in front of a computer all day are at high risk for varicose veins. It is estimated that fifty-percent of adult Americans have at least some varicosities. Women tend to be affected more than men. There are some simple practices that can improve circulation and lesson the symptoms of varicose veins.

Instructions

    • 1

Move often to increase circulation throughout the work-day. If your job requires you to stand or sit for long periods of time, get up and walk around at least once per hour. Elevate your legs for 20 minutes each day at a level above your heart to lesson symptoms caused by varicose veins.

    • 2

Wear elastic stockings to support the varicose veins and prevent swelling. Elastic stockings are available in different pressure strengths at medical supply stores and are often ordered and fitted per a doctor's prescription. Wear loose fitting clothing so as not to restrict blood flow.

    • 3

Eat plenty of dietary fiber to keep the colon clean and prevent constipation. Chronic constipation can contribute to varicose veins.

    • 4

Use herbs to improve circulation. Butcher's broom, ginkgo biloba, gotu kola and hawthorn berries are known to improve circulation.

    • 5

Avoid foods that promote water retention, swelling or formation of mucus in the body, such as animal protein, processed and refined foods, sugar, cheese, peanuts, ice cream, fried foods, tobacco, alcohol and salt.

    • 6

Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in fat and refined carbohydrates. Include garlic, ginger, onions and pineapple. Eat blackberries and cherries to prevent future varicose veins and ease symptoms.

    • 7

Get regular, moderate exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Walking, swimming and bicycling all promote good circulation.
