How to Raise Blood Pressure

It's common to hear about the problems associated with high blood pressure, but severely low blood pressure can be dangerous as well. When not enough blood is being circulated through the body, a person can develop chronic lightheadedness and dizziness, and if the condition persists it can even result in a heart attack.Hypotension is brought on by some of the same conditions that can cause high blood pressure, including stress. It can also be caused by certain medications, dehydration or extreme heat. If you have low blood pressure, try some of these suggestions to help stabilize your blood pressure.

Rehydrate yourself. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of low blood pressure, and can be the cause of many other problems. Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids, and make sure they are the right kind of fluids. Sodas can make the problem worse; instead, drink water and plenty of electrolytes. In addition, cut back on any alcohol consumed, as that can make the condition worse as well.

    • 2

Increase your salt intake. Just as it's crucial for someone with high blood pressure to limit their salt, those with low blood pressure can benefit from adding more to their diet. If you know you have chronic low blood pressure, keep some salty snacks in your desk at work or in your cupboards at home. If you don't like salt, there are other things--such as soy sauce--that you can add to your diet to increase your sodium.

Take it slow. The dizziness of low blood pressure is most often felt when standing up or sitting down. Instead of jumping to your feet, take a few deep breaths and stand up (or sit down) slowly.

    • 4

For a temporary fix, try a cup of regular coffee or caffeinated tea. It's only a short-term fix, but if you're feeling the effects particularly suddenly, it can help.

    • 5

Change your sleeping position. Elevating your head while in bed can help your circulation and lessen the dizzy feeling that happens when you get up in the morning.

    • 6

Check your blood pressure often, especially when you feel a fainting spell coming on. Keep track of what your readings were, and report any sudden, extreme drops to your doctor.
