People may mistake the swelling caused by pre-eclampsia with normal swelling that may occur during pregnancy. It is crucial to realize the difference between slight swelling from water retention and the excessive swelling that may occur in pre-eclampsia. If you experience any swelling of the legs, feet, arms, face or overall swelling contact your obstetrician immediately. Excessive swelling is a sign of pre-eclampsia.

Another sign of pre-eclampsia is rapid weight gain. A pregnant woman suffering from pre-eclampsia may gain 2 to 5 pounds within a week.

Other symptoms of pre-eclampsia include headache, abdominal pain, blurred vision, dizziness, fainting and/or seizures.
