Male hypogonadism occurs when testosterone is not produced in the body as needed. There are two different types of hypogonadism, primary and secondary. Primary occurs if there is a problem with the testicles and secondary may be a result of a pituitary gland problem. Causes of hypogonadism include genetic disorders, infections such as the mumps and damage to the testicles or pituitary gland from injuries or cancers treatments such as radiation therapy. Spot symptoms. Hypogonadism may be present at birth or develop at a later time. Symptoms may vary depending on the age of onset. Symptoms may include, underdeveloped male genitals, an increase in body fat, a lack of muscle mass, development of breasts and infertility.

See an endocrinologist. A doctor who specializes in hormonal disorders will be able to evaluate symptoms and order the needed tests to confirm a diagnosis of hypogonadism. Tests ordered will include blood work to determine hormone levels, genetic studies and depending on the age of the male a semen analysis may be ordered.

Take hormones. The usual hormone prescribed is testosterone. It can help with secondary male characteristics such as increasing muscle mass, deepening of the voice and facial hair growth. It may also improve sex drive. Testosterone can be taken in the form of a gel, a patch, as an injection or orally.

Get surgery. If the cause of hypogonadism is from a pituitary tumor then surgery will be needed to remove the tumor. Other treatments may be needed such as radiation therapy. If damage was done to the pituitary gland additional hormone treatment may be indicated.

Seek treatment for infertility as needed. Assisted reproduction techniques are available which may help a male with hypogonadism. A fertility specialist will be able to evaluate your particular situation and decide on an appropriate treatment. Treatment is also available for erectile dysfunction. Be aware of the emotional issues that may face a male who has hypogonadism. Depending on the age of the male he may face teasing at school if puberty has not started.
