Care needs of an individual with a nasogastric tube?

1. Monitor for complications:**

- Monitor for signs and symptoms of tube displacement or obstruction, such as:

- Abdominal pain

- Nausea

- Vomiting

- Diarrhea

- Inability to pass flatus

2. Maintain tube patency:

- Flush the tube with water every 4-6 hours or as ordered.

- Use a 35-mL syringe to flush the tube with at least 30 mL of water each time.

- Do not use carbonated beverages or medications to flush the tube unless ordered by a physician.

3. Provide proper nutrition:

- Follow the prescribed diet plan.

- Administer tube feedings slowly and at a constant rate.

- Elevate the head of the bed 30-45 degrees during and for 30 minutes after feedings to reduce risk for aspiration.

4. Prevent skin breakdown:

- Assess the skin around the tube insertion site for signs of redness, irritation, or breakdown.

- Cleanse skin with mild soap and water

- Apply a barrier cream to protect skin from secretions.

5. Maintain oral hygiene:

- Brush the teeth and gums gently at least twice a day.

- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste.

- Rinse mouth after each brushing.

6. Provide comfort measures:

- Keep the head of the bed elevated to reduce the risk for aspiration.

- Change the individual's position regularly to prevent skin breakdown.

- Provide pain medication as needed.
