How to Get Rid of Fallen Asleep Arms

If you are experiencing numbness or a tingling sensation in your arms, it is likely that they have temporarily "fallen asleep." The medical terminology for this temporary condition is paresthesia, and it is typically caused by unnaturally nerve and vein compression. Extended driving periods, failure to take stretch breaks at the office, or prolonged seasons of bed rest can all compress the nerves and cause your arms to fall asleep. To get rid of the numb or tingling sensation, it is imperative to free nerves from excess pressure and get your blood circulating through your limbs again.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull your vehicle to the side of the road if you are driving when your arms fall asleep; get out of the car if it is safe to do so. Change your position if you are seated at a desk or lying in bed, to relieve pressure on compressed nerves and veins. Stand up if at all possible.

    • 2

Get your blood circulating by pacing back and forth, or taking a short jog. Rotate your arms while you walk or jog to help blood move to these exterior limbs quickly.

    • 3

Massage your arms when they begin to tingle or burn intensely; this will help to ease the unpleasant sensations, signaling that your arms are beginning to receive the blood they need to "wake up" and work properly. Be patient, your arms will be back to normal in a few seconds.
