How to Measure for Catheters
Incontinence can lead to embarrassing situations for anyone who suffers from it. External catheters can channel urinary leakage and protect the skin from damage from the urine. These are connected to a collection bag, normally secured to the leg of the user. They can also be used in conjunction with intermittent catheters which are inserted up the urethra into the bladder. You must first measure the size of the penis to determine how large a catheter will be needed to ensure there is no constriction or leakage from the connection.Things You'll Need

1
Measure the circumference of the penis with a measuring tape. You now need to work out the diameter of the penis using the formula: diameter = circumference (in mm) x 7/22.
-
2
Find the answer to 7/22. This works out at 0.318 recurring.
-
3
Work out the diameter of the penis. This would be the circumference multiplied by 0.318.
For example, if the circumference of a penis is 80 mm then the diameter would be 80 x 0.318 = 25.45 mm. Buy the external catheter with the correct diameter.
-
4
Measure the length of the penis. External catheters are available in short and regular lengths. Check which size catheter will be appropriate.
-
5
Ensure that there is enough space between the foreskin on an uncircumcised male and the sheath to prevent the foreskin from being drawn into the sheath outlet during urination.
-
6
Have the person being fitted change position. If the penis retracts, then a shorter sheath might be required.
