The Causes of Reccuring Hiccups

Hiccups happen when the diaphragm -- the internal muscle initiating breathing -- gets irritated or overstimulated. The experience of a hiccup is like trying to walk through a closed door. The air cannot get into the lungs because the windpipe is shut. Many things can initiate hiccups, but just a few are responsible for recurring episodes. Hiccups that do not resolve within 48 hours are likely more serious with a specific cause.
  1. Alcohol Use

    • For those who imbibe, recurring hiccups can occur. Alcohol affects the brain and central nervous system and these effects might bring on hiccups. Alcoholism or bouts of overindulgence often cause hiccup episodes.

    Being Male

    • More men experience frequent or longer-lasting episodes of hiccups. According to eMedicine, 82 percent of prolonged hiccup attacks happen to males. Get a full physical examination to determine underlying causes.

    Psychogenic Causes

    • Stress, anxiety and insomnia are psychogenic causes of frequent or recurring hiccups. One of these was likely the cause if the episodes resolve with sleep.

    Medical Causes

    • Heart arrhythmias that cause fainting lead to recurring hiccups. Reflux conditions affecting the stomach or esophagus contribute. Kidney failure, nerve issues, hiatal hernia, asthma, ear infections and tumors are other possible causes of hiccups.
