How to Install Hand Controls on a Car
Hand controls enable a disabled person with no movement in his legs to drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission. The controls use a simple push/pull system connected to the vehicle pedals to operate the throttle and brake. Once installed, the vehicle can be operated either with the hand controls or the pedals for able-bodied drivers. Each set of hand controls is made specific to the vehicle it will be used in.Instructions

1
Assemble the hand control system according to the manufacturer's instructions. The push/pull handle will be located on the right-hand side of the set-up.

2
Attach the left-hand pedal clamp to the shaft above the brake pedal. Attach the right-hand pedal clamp to the shaft above the accelerator pedal. Secure the clamps with a bolt or a pre-installed locking screw, depending on the hand control model.

3
Secure the system to the dashboard console underneath the steering wheel. Ensure that the driver can fully depress and pull on the hand control while being able to operate the steering wheel. Some hand controls have a hanger to quickly attach them to the steering column, while others need to be bolted in place. Follow the manufacturer's directions for attaching the system.

Push the handle in toward the dashboard. The brake pedal should depress simultaneously. Pull the handle away from the dash. The accelerator pedal should depress simultaneously. Make sure that both pedals can fully depress when the levers are pushed to the limit.
