How to Wire a Wheelchair Lift

Wheelchair lifts are attached to vans or cars to aid people with disabilities while entering a vehicle. Once installed, the wiring of the wheelchair lift needs to be connected to enable the lift to function. If the lift does not have its own battery, the lift needs to be attached to the vehicle's battery. Ensure that the engine is cool before attempting to attach any wiring under the hood of the vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the end of the wire harness with the 30-amp auto-resetting fuse in a position near the battery. Allow enough slack on the wire so it can reach the positive terminal of the battery. Pull the fuse out of the fuse holder on the wire harness.

    • 2

Route the wire through the engine compartment, avoiding moving and hot components.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the vehicle fire wall into the passenger compartment. Make sure to check for and avoid objects that might get pierced by the drill bit. Feed the wire through the hole into the compartment. Wrap the section passing through the hole with electrical tape to avoid chafing. Seal the hole with silicon caulk.

    • 4

Feed the wiring through the cabin to the mounting area, concealing it beneath panels, doorsills and carpeting. Secure the wire up to the mounting location.

    • 5

Attach the red wire to the positive battery terminal. Attach the black wire to the negative terminal on the battery. Attach the blue wire to the negative battery terminal.

    • 6

Attach the 12-inch power adapter to the power harness. Connect the yellow butt connector to the matching color wire from the power adapter to the power harness.

    • 7

Join the connector from the lift to the connector from the power harness adapter. Attach the wire harness and pigtail connectors.
