How to Learn to Use a CPAP Machine

A CPAP (or continuous positive airway pressure) machine uses air pressure to help you breathe if you have sleep apnea. The CPAP prevents your airways from collapsing while you sleep and also improves how you sleep. Having issues with your CPAP machine may frustrate you and make you want to quit your treatment, as indicated by Sleep Apnea Guide. In order for CPAP to work effectively, consult your physician about how to correctly use your CPAP machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn how to wear your face mask. Choosing the right-sized face mask can make a difference in how effective your CPAP will be.

    • 2

Ask your physician or CPAP supplier to show you how to adjust the face straps on your CPAP mask. If the mask fits loosely, air will leak from your machine. This may cause you to wake up during the night or to take your mask off.

    • 3

Ensure that your CPAP is calibrated prior to using. It may take a few weeks for you to adjust to the CPAPs air pressure. You may have the air pressure in your unit adjusted several times before you find a tolerated pressure.

    • 4

Sleep with your unit beside your bed. You may want to invest in a nightstand to place at your beside.

    • 5

Assemble your CPAP unit as directed by your physician. The hose should be connected from your machine to your head gear.

    • 6

Plug in your unit and turn it on. Fit the mask onto your face and adjust the mask until there are no leaks. Loosely position the tube so that it doesn't snag on your bed or dresser. This will allow you to sleep without your head gear pulling on anything.
