Drink six to eight glasses of water each day. Your vocal chords require hydration in order to perform at their best. If they become dry, they can feel sore or strained, so keep them well lubricated with water.

    • 2

Sleep for at least eight hours each night. Lack of sleep can have a harsh effect on your voice. Your vocal chords require periods of inactivity and rest every day.

    • 3

Dissolve salt and baking soda into the warm water and gargle for 30 seconds. Gargling will wash away dust particles, mucus and other irritants while moistening and soothing your throat.

    • 4

Avoid eating spicy foods. Spicy foods can increase the production of stomach acids, which can rise and burn your vocal chords. Instead, eat a well-balanced diet of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and lean proteins.

    • 5

Brew a cup of lemon tea and add honey to taste. Lemon tea and honey can soothe your voice. The combination helps to coat your vocal chords, hydrate your throat and keep your voice performing at its best.

    • 6

Avoid talking, singing or yelling. Rest your voice and only speak when absolutely necessary. When you need to speak, talk in a light, gentle voice rather than a whisper. Whispering can put extra strain on your vocal chords.
