How to Use the Jobst Pump
The Jobst pump is an intermittent compression device, prescribed by a physician, that is used to treat lymphedema (severe swelling of an arm or leg resulting from damage to the lymphatic system of the body). The lymphatic system is responsible for maintaining the circulation of lymph fluid throughout the body. The lymphatic system works with the circulatory system to remove waste products that result from cell activity in the body. When the lymphatic system is not functioning properly, lymph fluid must be moved out of the affected area by an external source of compression, such as a Jobst pump.Things You'll Need
- Elastic wrap or custom elastic garment

1
Place the compressive sleeve on the affected limb and position the affected limb above the level of the heart. This may be more easily accomplished by lying down and propping the affected limb up on a pillow.
-
2
Turn on the Jobst pump using the parameters prescribed by the physician. The Jobst pump is worn for two to four hours at a time.
-
3
Apply an elastic garment (custom made) or elastic wrap to the limb, starting at the fingers or toes and working toward the body, after the prescribed treatment time is completed. This will keep the fluid that was pumped out from returning to the area.
