How to Use SCDs on Top of TED Hose

Lower extremity edema (swelling) can occur as a side effect of many different medical conditions. This edema can lead to a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can in turn become a pulmonary embolism (blood clot that travels to the lung) which can be fatal. Sequential Compression Devices (SCD) and TED hose (elastic stockings) are two types of external supports that help reduce edema in the lower extremities (legs).

Instructions

  1. TED Hose

    • 1

Put on the TED hose in place of socks/stockings.

    • 2

Pull the TED hose up to their full length. If you allow the hose to roll at the top, they may cut off blood circulation to that area, and additional edema may collect in this area.

    • 3

Wear shoes or socks with tread when you are wearing TED hose and are out of bed. That will reduce the risk of falling.

How to Use a Sequential Compression Device (SCD)

    • 4

Wrap the disposable sleeves around your legs as instructed by your healthcare professional and velcro them into place.

    • 5

Lie on your back or recline in a chair. Prop your legs up on pillows, ideally getting them above the level of your heart to allow gravity to help remove the edema from your legs.

    • 6

Turn on the SCD using the parameters prescribed by your physician.
