How to Use the Hope Crutches

The Hope crutch resembles a regular crutch, but it has a curve in it. The curve fits underneath the armpit with the crutch extending behind the user. When used properly, the curve reduces stress in the hand, elbow and spine. It also provides a secure fit under the armpit, allowing the user to maintain a more secure stance, which reduces the amount of falls and re-injury. The weight limit for the Hope crutch is 300 pounds.

Use the screwdriver to change the height of the crutch by adjusting the screw placement on the lower shaft of the crutch. The crutch should come within the height of two fingers from the armpit. This allows a small amount of space for movement when the user is in motion. Adjusting the height of the crutch to meet the armpit might cause discomfort.

Insert the crutch underneath the armpit. Place hand on crutch handle. Adjust the handle so that the user's arm can extend straight. The user's arm should not be bent during use of the Hope crutch. The crutch handle is secured with a wing nut. The wing nut can be loosened and tightened by manually unscrewing it with your hand. If the wing nut is too tight, use the shaft of a pencil to turn it.

Insert the crutch underneath the armpit again to ensure the crutch handle is in a comfortable position. The top of the crutch should extend behind the back. Arms extended straight to the handles will help the crutch remain in place against the back. Users should not lean forward when utilizing the Hope crutch. Doing so can cause her to lose her balance.
