Polypoid Density
Polyps and polypoids are growths that reside in mucous membranes, such as those found in nasal passages and intestines. Their density can help doctors identify the extent of proliferation of some diseases.-
Definition
-
The term "polypoid density" can refer to either the density of a single polyoid in relation to surrounding tissue, or the population density of several polypoids. Both of these results give clues to doctors about the nature of the polypoids and their proliferation.
Benefits
-
Polypoids in the colon can be a precursor to cancer, but most of the time polypoids are benign. Polyps that have a higher density than surrounding tissue will show up better on tests, which means that they can be seen sooner than polypoids.
Considerations
-
While polypoid density can be a factor in helping doctors determine the risks of cancer and other diseases, it can also mean absolutely nothing. A polyp is simply a growth, and can be anything from a buildup of calcium to out of control skin cells.
