Does Your Breathing Style Affect Your Sense of Smell?

Your sense of smell is directly related to how efficient your breathing is. The number one cause of loss of smell is because of a nasal obstruction blocking the passageways.
  1. Sicknesses

    • Colds, sinus infections and allergies are all big causes of loss of smell. All of these will block up the breathing passages, where the smell receptors are, so your smell will be greatly diminished.

    Head Damage

    • Sometimes surgery or a blow to the head can cause damage that results in loss of smell. Scar tissue affects the neurons that control sense of smell, or affects the neurons changing how you breathe.

    Smell Disorders

    • Sometimes reduced breathing capacity causes unnatural smell disorders. Hyposmia is reduced sense of smell, and anosmia is not being able to smell at all. Consult a doctor if you think you have a more serious problem.
