Orthotic Conditions of the Foot

Orthotics are shoe inserts designed to support the feet due to impending conditions. They help align the foot and decrease foot stress and pressure points. Orthotics do not correct foot conditions, but provide additional comfort when wearing shoes.
  1. Types

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, metatarsalgia is a foot condition that causes the ball of the foot to become inflamed. People with metatarsalgia can wear orthotic insoles to alleviate the pressure and absorb the shock. Individuals with flatfeet, corns, bunions and ankle sprains also benefit from using orthotics to support their feet and ankles while wearing shoes.

    Benefits

    • With orthotics, people who have foot conditions experience less pain and discomfort while wearing shoes. Orthotics increase physical performance for athletes, restaurant servers, nurses and other professionals who spend a lot of time on their feet standing, walking or running.

    Considerations

    • Orthotics are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Standard orthotics fit into sneakers and flats, but orthotics for high heels exist, too.
