How to Eliminate Oiliness of the Scalp

Oily scalps can be caused by a number of reasons from hygiene to styling products to diet to heredity, but the cause is always the same: special glands in your scalp, called sebaceous glands, secrete more oil than is necessary to maintain healthy hair and scalp. The treatment for this excess oiliness varies depending on the external cause of the problem. These treatments can range from simple behavior changes to the daily application of topical mixtures.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid using hair conditioner, which only adds more oil to your scalp than it produces naturally.

    • 2

Stay out of direct sunlight and try to avoid environments with very high humidity. These conditions increase the amount of sweat and oil produced by the scalp.

    • 3

Shampoo every day in order to keep up with the pace of oil production and wash it away before it collects.

    • 4

Mix 1 tbsp. of witch hazel with 1 tbsp. of mouth wash and apply it to the scalp with a cotton ball. This mixture will help to disinfect and constrict sebaceous glands and decrease the amount of oil released onto the scalp.

    • 5

Avoid overbrushing your hair. Not only does overly-vigorous brushing coat your hair with oil from your scalp, but the pressure stimulates the hair follicles and causes them to produce more oil.
