Hyperglycemia Symptoms
Hyperglycemia is a condition where there is more sugar in the blood than the body can use. This usually happens with diabetes, but there are other conditions that can also cause blood sugar to rise.-
Symptoms
-
There are several symptoms of high blood sugar and most are associated with the way the body deals with the excess sugar. The most common symptoms are: frequent urination, frequent thirst, frequent hunger, weight loss and blurred vision.
Frequent Urination
-
When excess sugar appears in the urine, the kidneys have to use more water to dilute the urine. This causes a person to urinate more often.
Frequent Thirst
-
When the kidneys use more water, to dilute sugar-laden urine, this causes dehydration. More liquids are consumed to combat the fluid loss.
Frequent Hunger
-
Sugar is used by the cells for energy. When there is excess sugar in the blood that means it's not getting into the cells. This causes a person to eat more in an effort to get more energy into the cells.
Weight Loss
-
Because the cells are unable to use the energy from food consumption, people with high blood sugar tend to lose weight even while eating large quantities.
Blurred Vision
-
The eyes have a rich blood supply. Excess sugar in the blood can coat optic nerves or obstruct the vessels in the retina, causing vision problems.
