Slow Metabolism and Medications

A slow metabolism can make you easily fatigued and cause weight gain. Consult a doctor to find out if there is a more serious problem, such as hypothyroidism, that needs to be treated.
  1. Natural Remedies

    • If it is simply a slow metabolism that you are working with, exercising (such as jogging or yoga) can speed it up. Eating a balanced, healthy diet can help regulate your metabolism as well. Excessive dieting and consuming too few calories will slow it down, which is counterproductive.

    Synthroid

    • Synthroid is a medication that replaces a hormone that is naturally produced by your body and regulates metabolism and energy levels. It is used to treat hypothyroidism and prevent or treat goiter.

    Levoxyl

    • Levoxyl is prescribed when the body does not create enough hormones secreted by the thyroid on its own. It can treat hormone imbalances but should not be used for weight problems.

    Cytomel

    • This medication supplements or replaces the naturally occurring hormones of the thyroid, helping to regulate metabolic levels.

    Diet Pills

    • Be sure to avoid drug store and online pills that promise an instant boost in metabolism and weight loss. These are almost always scams and do not deliver the results they promise.
