Can You Go to the ER for Migraine?
In most cases, migraines can be managed at home with over-the-counter pain relievers and rest. However, there are some cases where a migraine may be so severe that it requires emergency medical attention.
Symptoms that warrant a trip to the emergency room for a migraine include:
* Sudden, severe headache that is unlike any previous headache
* Headache that is accompanied by confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness
* Headache that is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, or rash
* Headache that is accompanied by vision changes, such as blurred vision or seeing flashing lights
* Headache that is accompanied by weakness or numbness on one side of the body
* Headache that is accompanied by difficulty speaking or understanding speech
* Headache that is accompanied by nausea and vomiting that cannot be controlled with medication
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to go to the emergency room immediately. The emergency room physician will be able to assess your condition and determine if further treatment is necessary.
In most cases, migraines that are treated in the emergency room can be managed with intravenous fluids, pain relievers, and anti-nausea medication. However, in some cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
