Ocular Migraines as a Side Effect of Birth Control Pills

Ocular migraines are migraines that are caused by constriction of blood vessels, preventing blood flow to the eye. These types of headaches can cause temporary loss of sight. While scary, ocular migraines are generally harmless and rarely cause permanent damage.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of ocular migraines include pain around the eyes accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In some cases there is a temporary period of impaired vision. Ocular migraines can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

    Oral Contraceptives

    • Birth control pills are known to cause certain types of migraine headaches in some individuals. Ocular migraines are no exception. Oral contraceptives are a common trigger for migraines.

    Causes

    • Since the onset of ocular migraines is very sporadic and inconsistent, it can be difficult to find the true cause. Some studies suggest that the culprit is the estrogen in oral contraceptives.

    Diagnosis

    • Be sure that you are indeed suffering from ocular migraines. See both your eye doctor and your gynecologist to receive a definitive diagnosis.

    Solutions

    • If it is determined that your oral contraceptives are the cause of your ocular migraines, be open to the alternatives. There are many barrier contraceptive methods available that are non-hormonal. If appropriate, progestin-only pills may be an option. Discuss your options with your physician so that you can make an informed decision.
