Define Refractory Migraines

There are many terms associated with migraines, some of which overlap or refine other terms. Migraines are usually differentiated depending on the part of the body where it originates ("form"), but sometimes a migraine is referred to by a broader or more generalized characteristic ("type").
  1. Terminology

    • A refractory migraine should be thought of as a type of migraine that presents in various forms.

    Type

    • A refractory migraine is any form of migraine that is impossible to manage or is resistant to ordinary methods of treatment. This term does not identify the specifics of cause or point of origin.

    Form

    • Basilar migraines (originating at the base of the skull) and ocular migraines (originating in the eyes) are examples of migraines defined by the form they take.

    Diagnosis

    • Basilar, ocular, or any other form of migraine can also be refractory if all methods of treatment are ineffective against it. Refractory migraine is therefore an incomplete diagnosis because it only indicates that the pain from this type of migraine is unmanageable.

    Treatment

    • Because the pain associated with refractory migraines is unrelenting and defies treatment, those who suffer from them often experience feelings of panic and desperation. It is especially important that refractory migraines be evaluated by a doctor who specializes in treating migraines.
