Wilen Migraine Cure

A migraine is a neurological condition that affects millions of Americans. While most describe it as an extremely powerful headache, other symptoms of migraines can include nausea and vomiting, difficulty seeing, and an altered state of perception. There has not yet been definitive research on the cause of migraines, and the remedies that work for some people are ineffective in others. The "Wilen cure" for migraines has been a popular natural remedy since the early 1990s.
  1. What is the Wilen Cure

    • Many migraine sufferers have found, after using the Wilen method, that their migraines are greatly reduced in severity, or that the symptoms disappear completely.

The Wilen sisters, Joan and Lydia, recommend several different cures for migraines. One of the most frequently cited is to rub the temples with a lemon rind and then tie a towel tightly around one's head. Doing so reportedly cures migraines quickly---even those that have lasted for days. Variations on this method include applying the lemon peel to the skin, holding it there with a dishtowel or a handkerchief. Once the lemon peel begins to tingle the skin, the towel or handkerchief may be removed. By this point, the cure is supposed to have taken effect.

    How Does It Work

    • Doctors have long studied the idea of "fruit hedonics," wherein the sensation of fruits and vegetables---the smell, the taste, the feel---seem to have a therapeutic effect. Scientists believe that fruit therapy works due to an increased relaxation of the individual, which results in the heightened function of alpha waves in the brain. Some suggest that the neurotransmitters in the brain are changed due to the scent and taste of fruits. While science is still searching for an explanation, such remedies have been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments.

    Other Proposed Wilen Remedies

    • The Wilen sisters recommend other remedies, as well. For instance, the placing one's feet in a hot bath and an ice pack on the head is purported to work quite well. Some individuals may find relief in the form of a watermelon rind which, after one consumes the fruit itself, is placed across the forehead and held in place with a towel of handkerchief. Raw almonds, coffee, and black tea (remedies that have long been used to relieve head pain) are also recommended in their writings as ways to draw the pain out of a migraine and feel healthy again.
