Migraine Home Remedy
A migraine and its side effects can disrupt your daily routine. Migraines are very severe headaches that are usually located on one side of the head. During a migraine the temporal artery, which can be found right under the skin at the temple, becomes enlarged. This in turn causes nerves to release chemicals in the brain. The chemicals cause the pain and other unwanted side effects such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. However, there are some methods to try at home to help ease the pain.-
What To Do
-
When a migraine hits you, the best thing to do is try to relax as much as possible. Take an aspirin, lay down somewhere quiet and close your eyes. Applying a warm or cold compress to your head may help. Create a tranquil area for yourself and try to sleep if possible. A lack of sleep is often one of the main causes of migraines.
Avoid stressing yourself out. Take time during the day to do simple breathing exercises to calm and center yourself. Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth slowly. Repeat this for about 10 times and you should feel a little better. Keep some essential oils such as peppermint oil around. Take a few drops and rub them on the area of the head that hurts as well as on your wrists to help relax you.
Also, keep a journal of the foods you eat when you experience a migraine. Some people are susceptible to certain foods that are more inclined to cause headaches and migraines, such as chocolate and red wine. You may notice a pattern and choose to avoid these foods and drinks.
What To Take
-
Be sure to keep yourself hydrated and drink plenty of water. Dehydration also can lead to migraines. However, another quick remedy is to consume some caffeine. While caffeine isn't great for you in excessive amounts, once the migraine has set in, caffeine can actually help calm the symptoms. Be sure to eat foods that are high in magnesium, such as dark leafy greens, fruits and nuts. Additionally, taking vitamin B2 or eating foods with riboflavin already in them also can soothe your aching head.
