OTC Migraine Treatments

Migraine headaches are extremely painful and can even be incapacitating at their worst. They are often treated with prescription medications such as pain relievers, antidepressants and anti-seizure medications. However, many sufferers of mild to moderate migraine headaches are able to get relief by using over-the-counter (OTC) medications. There are several OTC options, so it can take some experimentation to find the one that works best for you.
  1. Definition

    • Migraine headaches are chronic, severe headaches that can last for several hours, or even days. The symptoms are often so severe that the sufferer is completely impaired from doing normal activities. These symptoms typically include pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to both light and sound. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no cure for migraines, but their symptoms are treatable. Migraines can start as early as childhood, although they sometimes begin in the teen years or in early adulthood. As a chronic condition, they usually recur throughout a person's life.

    Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help relieve mild migraine headaches. The most common NSAID is ibuprofen, which is sold under brand names like Motrin and Advil. It is also available as a store brand at many grocery stores and pharmacies. NSAIDs should not be taken too frequently because they can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers. The Mayo Clinic says they may also trigger rebound headaches.

    Aspirin

    • The Mayo Clinic says that plain aspirin can help many migraine sufferers when taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. Brand name aspirin and generic varieties are equally effective. Aspirin can help mild headaches but by itself it may not ease the pain of moderate to severe attacks. It is often combined with other medications to treat moderate migraines.

    Combination OTC Medications

    • There are many OTC medications marketed specifically for the relief of migraine headaches. These are actually the combination of several ingredients. The Mayo Clinic says one type combination is aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine, which are found in the Excedrin Migraine OTC product. Combination OTC medications are effective for mild to moderate migraine headaches, but they usually can't ease the most severe attacks.

    Use

    • The Mayo Clinic says that the best way to use OTC migraine headache treatments is to take them as soon as you feel any symptoms. They are most effective when taken as early as possible. You should also lie down in a dark room after taking the medication. You can take a rest while staying awake or you can allow yourself to fall asleep and take a nap.
