Tricks to Get Rid of a Migraine
Although the symptoms of migraines may vary by individual, most patients experience persistent headaches, which may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting; sensitivity to light, smells and sounds is also common. While avoiding migraine triggers may be the best way to deal with them, there are also some tips that help you get rid of a migraine once it has begun.-
Biofeedback
-
Learning biofeedback can help you manage your migraines, and help you to learn how to quickly relieve a migraine once it begins. Biofeedback involves learning to control your body's reaction to stress and external stimuli. You learn to manage your skin temperature and pulse points, and how to warm and relax the muscles in your hands, head and neck. While biofeedback machines to monitor your vital signs are available for home purchase, you can also learn the techniques and use biofeedback without a machine, particularly when you feel a migraine beginning.
Medications to Relieve Migraines
-
According to Migraines.org, certain medications can be taken once a migraine begins, which can abort the migraine in its early stages. These medications block the contraction of the muscles in the head that are associated with migraines, thus the reason the medications are known as cerebral vasoconstrictor abortive agents. These medications include Migranal, Imitrex, Amerge, Maxalt Zomig, Relpax, and Midrin. While these medications require a prescription as of August 2009, they can be taken at any time when a migraine is beginning to occur. Maxalt and Zomig are even available in a melting tablet, so no water is required, making it easy to ingest.
Lie Down and apply pressure to your temples
-
If you do not have access to medication, and you do not know biotherapy, the simplest thing to do to get rid of a migraine is to lie down in a cool, dark place and apply pressure to your temples. Avoid bright lights, strong smells and other triggers and simply try to isolate yourself in a quiet place. Sustained pressure on the temples can be applied by tying a bandanna around the head, or massaging the temples with the fingertips.
