Side Effects of Imitrex
Imitrex, or sumatriptan, is a medication prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches. As with all prescription and over-the-counter medications, there are several side effects that can be experienced when taking Imitrex. Take these possible side effects into account when deciding if this medication is for you. If you are already taking Imitrex, consult with your doctor if you do experience any side effects so she can decide if your dosage needs to be changed or a different medication tried.-
Pills
-
The most common side effects associated with the Imitrex pill are dizziness, fatigue, skin tingling and muscle aches and heaviness. There are several different dosages of Imitrex in pill form, so consult with your doctor to determine if a different dosage may lessen the side effects you are experiencing and still allow you to benefit from the medication. There are also some rare but severe Imitrex side effects for those with heart conditions using the pill or injection form of the medication.
Spray
-
The nasal spray form of Imitrex may leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth after administration. Other side effects of the medication in this form include soreness in the nose and throat, sinus irritation, nausea and vomiting. The more common side effects associated with the Imitrex pill may also be experienced with the spray.
Injection
-
Imitrex side effects with injections of the medication also mirror the symptoms of the pill and spray, with the exception of the aftertaste and irritation to the nasal passages that are associated with the spray. There can also be swelling, soreness and irritation at the injection site. For those with heart conditions, the potential risks of taking Imitrex in the injection form need to be weighed heavily against the potential benefits.
Mild Reactions
-
When experiencing some of the more common and mild Imitrex side effects, you may consider continuing the medication to see if the side effects clear after a few days when your body has had time to adjust to the medication. If you feel that the benefits of Imitrex in relieving your migraine headaches outweigh some minor side effects, you may choose to continue the medication even if the side effects persist. However, when mild side effects continue over time, it can become physically and emotionally wearing and others may choose to explore alternative treatment options rather than continue to live with the long-term side effects they have been experiencing.
Severe Reactions
-
Rashes, swelling and shortness of breath are considered an allergic reaction to a drug rather than side effects. Consult a doctor immediately if any of these occur. Also consult your physician if any of the previously listed side effects occurs in a severe form. Other side effects above and beyond what is commonly experienced may also occur, including any sudden and severe changes in health. It is important to note that in those with coronary artery disease, sudden death has occurred in a small number of people also using Imitrex pills and injections. If you are experiencing symptoms that could be life-threatening, call 911.
