Migraine Trigger Factors
Migraines can be triggered by a number of things, and each individual experiences them differently. Triggers can be as simple as a change in diet or the smell of a certain perfume. Although migraineurs have different triggers, the most common factor is an instability in the body.-
Dehydration

You can be dehydrated even if you do not think you are thirsty. Doctors suggest 64 to 80 ounces or eight glasses of water a day in order to maintain proper hydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages increase dehydration in the body and must be avoided.
Stress

A buildup of tension is one of the most common trigger factors. A bad work week, an argument with a loved one or financial pressures can bring on migraines even after the situation has been resolved.
Hormones

If your hormones are fluctuating, migraines may follow. Many women experience migraines with their periods and during pregnancy or menopause. Oral contraceptives or other forms of hormone replacement therapy can also increase the consistency of migraines.
Environmental Stimuli

Changes in your immediate environment can trigger migraines as well. A drop in barometric pressure, bright lights, loud sounds and certain smells, even pleasant ones such as perfume, can spark a migraine.
Changes in sleep patterns

Jet lag and erratic sleeping patterns can especially affect the occurrence of migraines. Changing your sleep schedule by as little as an hour can induce a migraine, especially in sleep-sensitive individuals.
Foods

Alcohol, aged cheeses, chocolate, MSG and aspartame have been found to increase the likelihood of migraines.
