Types of Light Trigger Migraines

Migraine headaches are painful and sometimes debilitating. They can be triggered by multiple factors such as scents or walking. Most migraines have warning signs that can last for days before a migraine occurs, such as irritability, fatigue, or sleepiness. Many migraine sufferers complain about a sensitivity to light, and there are many light sources that can trigger a migraine.
  1. Television

    • The lights produced by a television, or any flickering produced by the screen can trigger a migraine.

    Sunlight

    • If you are experiencing preceding symptoms of a migraine (such as sleepiness, nausea, fatigue) stay out of the sunlight, as this can cause an episode.

    Computer Screens

    • Even sitting in front of a computer screen (because of the unnatural light or glares that is produced) can cause migraines.

    Office Lighting

    • If you experience a migraine while at work, it could be more than just stress that is attributing to your headache.

    Incandescent Light Bulbs

    • Glares from these light bulbs are harsh on the eyes. It is better to have a frosted bulb as this can reduce glare.

    Fluorescent Lighting

    • Fluorescent lighting can cause flickers that are not perceptible to the eye. The flicker produced by this bulb is what triggers a migraine.
