Connection Between Vomiting & Migraine Headaches

A migraine headache can be so ferocious that it results in vomiting. Not all migraineurs (those who suffer from this awful condition) will vomit, but many do.

  1. Identification

    • When a migraine starts, a nervous system reaction occurs and halts the proper function of your digestive tract. The stomach is subsequently not able to empty itself as it normally does throughout the day. If you eat something while in the throes of a migraine, it is probably going to come right back up. This includes any medicine that you might take.

    Suppositories

    • Some migraine sufferers opt to insert suppositories rectally to prevent vomiting. These can be taken with a pain killer.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If you know that a migraine is imminent, Healingwell.com recommends that you take a prescription antiemetic drug that will prevent you from vomiting.

    Results

    • FamilyDoctor.org explains that entiemetic drugs contain bismuth subsalicylate that protects the stomach lining.

    Other Options

    • Imitrex injections or Triptan in nasal spray form can abort a migraine attack. These drugs circumvent the stomach so they don't result in vomiting.
