Massage Treatment for MS

Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the myelin sheaths protecting the body's nerves are attacked by the body's immune system. While there is no known cause or cure, you can take steps to help ease the symptoms and return to a functional life. Not surprisingly, some modalities work better than others at easing the symptoms of the disease.
  1. Purpose of Massage on MS Clients

    • Massage is important for maintaining and improving flexibility and range of motion. Massage also aids in relaxation, reduces incidences of depression, and lowers stress.

    Energy Work

    • Energy work is recommended for MS clients who are experiencing a lack of sensory response (no feeling) due to the gentle nature of the technique. You can also use light stroking and rubbing in these situations to stimulate circulation.

    Bowenwork

    • Bowenwork therapy works to reset the muscles and tendons with gentle bending and rolling, sending subtle vibrations through the muscle body. For MS clients, this results in a quick decrease in tremors and increase in muscle relaxation.

    Trager Work

    • Trager work uses gentle rocking movements to bring relaxation to the client. Trager practitioners use directed movement to help MS clients relearn movement techniques within their capabilities and limitations.

    Contraindications for Massage

    • Because there is no one massage protocol when dealing with multiple sclerosis, each session and client should be handled individually. Do not perform circulation massage on areas where the client has no feeling, and never perform massage during an acute flare-up.
