NSAIDS & Treatments for MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complex autoimmune disease. People with MS often use NSAID pain relievers to manage their symptoms. It is important to be aware of the side effects of medications and how they might impact symptoms.
  1. MS Symptoms

    • MS targets the nervous system and can attack anywhere. Symptoms listed by the Mayo Clinic include dizziness, fatigue, numbness, double vision, muscle spasms and tremors.

    NSAID Pain Relievers

    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to treat pain and inflammation. They are available over the counter or by prescription. Commonly used NSAIDs are aspirin, Celebrex and Motrin.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of NSAIDs include nausea, vomiting, rash, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue.

    NSAIDs and MS

    • Patients with MS must be careful to monitor their symptoms after beginning any medication, prescription or over-the-counter. Fatigue has been reported as a problematic side effect for people with MS.

    How to Decide

    • Many people find that the benefits of NSAIDS outweigh the side effects. Careful observation and communication with a doctor is necessary before beginning or ending any medical treatments.
