What Are the Treatments for the Symptoms of MS?

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic disease that attacks the nervous system by damaging the myelin coating that protects the nerves. MS is difficult to diagnose in its early stages because symptoms may disappear for several months and then reappear.
  1. Causes

    • Childhood infections, genetics and other factors may be causes of the occurrence and development of MS.

    Symptoms

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, the signs of MS may include weakness or numbness in one or more limbs, impairment or loss of vision and fatigue. Pain and tingling in different parts of the body, tremors and dizziness have also been reported with MS.

    Medications

    • Corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation, and interferons may be used to delay the worsening of MS symptoms. Glatiramer blocks destructive attacks by the body's immune system on the nervous system.

    Other Therapies

    • Physical or occupational therapists may teach patients strengthening and stretching exercises to help them with their daily activities.

    Lifestyle

    • MS patients may experience some relief from their symptoms if they get enough rest, avoid extreme heat and get regular aerobic exercise.
