Mutiple Sclerosis Symptoms

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the white matter in the central nervous system. White matter is destroyed in the presence of MS, interfering with communication between nerves cells. The central nervous system controls virtually all of the body systems, making symptoms of MS diverse. Many symptoms associated with MS are also associated with other diseases, and there is no single symptom, or well-defined group of symptoms, related to MS that are easily identified. Any unexplained or unusual symptom should be investigated by your physician.
  1. Features

    • Multiple sclerosis can affect the senses, mental activity and thought, vision, motor skills and neurologic system. Multiple tests, including an MRI, and close observation of symptoms may be needed to determine whether your symptoms are the result of MS.

    Sensory Changes

    • Senses affected by MS include taste, smell and pain. MS can cause feelings of numbness, vibration and sensations that feel like electricity that occur in the absence of external stimuli. Other symptoms of MS might include diminished or loss of sensation, feelings of numbness and unexplained sensations of heat and cold.

    Visual Symptoms

    • Visual changes may be associated with MS. Pupils may not respond to light and dark. Blurred vision and double vision may occur. Loss of color vision and abnormal eye movements called nystagmus (jerking motion of the eyes) are also symptoms of MS.

    Muscle Changes

    • Weakness and loss of muscle mass can occur. Other muscle changes that might be symptoms of MS include loss of coordination and strength. Muscle twitches and tics, paralysis, difficulty standing up straight and dragging the feet may be signs of MS.

    Other Symptoms

    • Changes in mood, balance and forgetfulness are all also symptoms of MS. Speech can become impaired. Slurring of speech and difficulty comprehending what is being said may be symptoms of MS. Neurologic changes may include seizures and loss of bowel and bladder control.
The variety of symptoms can make it difficult to determine a diagnosis of MS without proper testing. Because the symptoms of MS are diverse, it is important to seek medical advice and targeted testing if you think you may be experiencing symptoms related to MS.
