How to Treat Multiple Sclerosis Memory Problems

Many multiple sclerosis patients suffer from cognitive impairments which cause memory loss. The memory problems stem from lesions in the brain caused by the disease and usually affect short-term memory. Doctor's can enroll patients in physical therapy programs meant to rehabilitate the area of the brain affected. There are activities a person with MS can do at home to help.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep a journal of important events that happened during the day. Write a few minutes each night before you go to sleep. When you have a question about something that has happened, use your journal for a reference.

    • 2

Hang a large calendar up in a family room or kitchen area where the entire family can write their upcoming plans. Make sure your family knows the calendar is your only reminder of events.

    • 3

Put everything in its place. Just like your mother always told you--there's a place for everything. You'll be more likely to remember where your medication, brush, dish rags or any other items are if you always keep them in the same place.

    • 4

Buy a small tape recorder or digital recording device to use for lists and reminders. Record the reminders so you can listen to them throughout the day. This is also much easier for MS patients who have lost dexterity in their hands and have a hard time writing.

    • 5

Wear a watch with an alarm that you can set for several times throughout the day to remind you of important chores like taking pills, feeding the cat or picking up the kids from school.

    • 6

Make a master grocery list with things you normally buy on it. Make several copies before going shopping, and cross off the items you don't need. This is easier than writing all them down each time.
