How to Use Crutches With MS
Multiple Sclerosis, commonly referred to as MS, is a disease that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Among other symptoms, difficulty with standing, moving the legs or walking is common in those diagnosed with MS. In fact, the National MS Society reports that close to two-thirds of people with the disease have trouble walking. Fortunately, the proper use of crutches can help alleviate some of the difficulty, making daily tasks such as bathing or grocery shopping easier.Instructions

Consult with a health care professional to make sure that crutches are the right solution for your case. One advantage of crutches, as compared with other mobility aids, is that they do not take up much space and they require little upper body strength. However, they do require balance and might not be appropriate for those who experience spasms or fatigue.

Select the type of crutches that are most comfortable for you to use. You'll likely have to choose between standard underarm crutches and forearm crutches. Depending on your specific needs, your crutches might be fit with extra features to make them easier to use, including padding or rubber grips.

With your doctor's guidance and supervision, practice with maneuvering up and down stairs and walking at an incline. Make sure you are confident in the proper use of your crutches before you commit to relying on them daily.
