MS Related to Toxic Metals & Treatments

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the myelin sheaths covering nerves in the spinal cord and brain become deteriorated. Communication in the neural pathway to and from the brain becomes scrambled, and nerves have difficulty functioning. Exposure to toxic metals can be an MS trigger.
  1. Mercury

    • Mercury fillings are attributed to MS.

Mercury vapor leeching from mercury amalgam fillings triggers multiple sclerosis. Four out of 10 case studies featured on a toxic metals information website are MS sufferers. When the fillings were removed in these patients, their MS symptoms diminished.

    Lead

    • Lead found in soil can cause MS.

Lead is another metal to which MS is often attributed. A study published by The British Journal of General Practice connects a higher MS prevalence to geographic areas with higher lead content in water, soil, vegetables and rocks. Lead poisoning can also result from paint.

    Aluminum

    • Exposure to aluminum is another possible catalyst for MS.

A study at Great Britain's Keele University demonstrated how MS is related to the toxic metal aluminum. Patient urine samples recorded higher-than-normal levels. Reducing exposure reduces symptoms.

    Iron

    • Iron has had a high presence in the brains of MS patients.

The Keele University study also showed a higher level of iron in MS patient urine samples. WebMD additionally reports higher levels of iron in the brains of MS patients.

    Soil Exposure

    • In the El Paso area, there were higher levels of toxic metals in the soil, and more cases of MS.

Higher-than-normal levels of sulfur, lead and arsenic were present in the soil in an area near El Paso, Texas, where the incidence of MS was also high.

    Treatments

    • Chelation is a vitamin therapy which helps to flush out metals and restore health.

Chelation therapy, detoxification and limiting exposure to toxic metals are common treatments to help limit MS symptoms caused by them.
