How to Avoid a Hernia
A hernia is a condition in which the muscle tissue that is supposed to contain an organ is weak or torn. If the opening in the tissue is large enough, part of the organ may poke through. The most common hernia sites are the groin, the upper thigh, the abdomen, near the bellybutton or where a surgical incision has been made. A hernia is caused by a combination of muscle tissue weakness and strenuous activity. Here are some ways to avoid developing a hernia:Instructions

1
Maintain a weight that is healthy for your height and body frame. Obesity can cause strain on the body and when combined with weakened muscle tissue, may result in a hernia. If you are obese or overweight, work with a dietician and your doctor to develop healthy eating and exercise plans.

Persistent coughing is one of the many forms of strain that can induce a hernia. See your doctor if you have bronchitis, emphysema or a constant cough. If you are a smoker, this is just another one of the many reasons to quit. Severe coughing strains your abdominal muscles and can result in a hernia.

Constipation also strains the body and may cause a hernia. Try to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods are high in fiber and help prevent constipation.

4
If you have recently had surgery and notice redness or excessive pain around the incision, see your doctor immediately. If an incision does not heal properly, the tissue may tear, allowing the organ to poke through.

5
Use caution when lifting heavy objects to prevent muscle tearing. Always bend at the knees and not the waist when lifting and do not take on more than you can handle.

Persistent sneezing and coughing can strain the body and cause the tearing or weakening of muscle tissue. If you have allergies or are sick, see your doctor for the proper treatment.
