Where is the Flexor and extensor muscle found in upper leg?
Flexor muscles of the upper leg:
- Iliopsoas: The iliopsoas muscle is located in the lower abdomen and upper thigh. It consists of two muscles, the psoas major and the iliacus, which come together to form a single tendon that inserts into the lesser trochanter of the femur. The iliopsoas muscle flexes the hip joint.
- Rectus femoris: The rectus femoris muscle is located on the front of the thigh. It is one of the four quadriceps muscles and inserts into the patella. The rectus femoris muscle flexes the hip joint and extends the knee joint.
Extensor muscles of the upper leg:
- Quadriceps femoris: The quadriceps femoris muscle is a group of four muscles located on the front of the thigh. The quadriceps femoris muscles are the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. The quadriceps femoris muscle extends the knee joint.
- Tensor fasciae latae: The tensor fasciae latae muscle is located on the lateral side of the thigh. It inserts into the iliotibial band, a thick band of tissue that runs from the hip to the knee. The tensor fasciae latae muscle abducts (moves away from the midline) the thigh and helps to stabilize the knee joint.
