What muscle is located directly beneath the gasrocnemius and has similar functions to gastrocnemius?
The soleus muscle is located directly beneath the gastrocnemius muscle in the back of the lower leg. Both the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles are involved in plantar flexion, which is the downward movement of the foot at the ankle joint. The soleus muscle is also involved in stabilizing the ankle joint during standing and walking.
