An episiotomy involves the muscles of the perineum, which is the area between the vagina and the anus. The perineal muscles include the levator ani muscle, the coccygeus muscle, and the superficial and deep transverse perineal muscles. An episiotomy is a surgical incision made in the perineum to enlarge the opening of the vagina during childbirth.
