Muscles contracting during inspiration:
1. Diaphragm:
- Primary muscle responsible for inspiration.
- Contracts and flattens, increasing thoracic volume.
2. External intercostal muscles:
- Located between ribs.
- Contract to elevate the ribs and increase thoracic volume.
3. Accessory inspiratory muscles:
- Only contract during deep inspiration or respiratory distress.
- Include sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, and pectoralis minor muscles.

4. Serratus posterior inferior:
- Supports and stabilizes the ribcage during deep breathing.
5. Quadratus lumborum:
- Assists diaphragmatic breathing.
